Miami, Fla. – (April 13, 2009) – Eric R. Hargis, president and CEO of the Epilepsy Foundation, recently announced that the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida (EFOF) has achieved the Epilepsy Foundation Standards of Excellence. EFOF is one of only three Epilepsy Foundation affiliates in the nation to earn the honor.

The Standards define what people with epilepsy should expect from an Epilepsy Foundation affiliate performing at the highest level. Affiliates are evaluated based on 35 Standards of Excellence that reflect the highest level of quality in the following areas: mission, governance, operations, finance, advocacy, research, communications, programs and development. The Epilepsy Foundation Standards Task Group implemented the process for affiliates to pursue and achieve the certification, while celebrating the uniqueness and diversity of each organization.

“Through the Standards of Excellence, we are furthering our efforts to become a more unified and mission-focused organization,” said Hargis. “Congratulations to EFOF’s Executive Director Karen Basha Egozi, Board President Pat Dean, and all of its staff and volunteers for attaining this distinction.”

“All of us at EFOF are honored to have achieved the Standards of Excellence,” said Basha Egozi. “Through our extensive programs and services, we strive to achieve excellence every day in serving the estimated 360,000 Floridians who suffer from epilepsy and their families, regardless of their financial situations.”

EFOF, established in 1971 as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3), serves as the lead advocate for the rights and needs of people with epilepsy and seizure disorders at the local, county and state level. EFOF provides valuable services, regardless of financial situation, to individuals and their families including advocacy; case management; information, referral, and support; medical services, neuropsychological services, prevention and education, individual and family counseling, research, development and fundraising, resource materials, support groups, and children’s camp.
